Illnesses such as Arthritis
Osteoporosis Prevention and Self Management Course
Self
Management Course for People with Chronic Illnesses such as Arthritis
What is meant by Chronic Illnesses?
Chronic Illnesses or conditions tend to cause problems over many
years. Some common examples are arthritis, heart disease, lung disease,
diabetes and stroke. In contrast, acute illnesses such as appendicitis
are short-lived, for after prompt and effective treatment a person
usually returns quickly to normal health.
Why a Self Management Course for People with Chronic Illness?
Most people with chronic illness suffer fatigue and loss of energy.
Some experience pain, while others have trouble breathing. Sleeping
problems are common, and many people experience depression, often
combined with concerns for the future.
So while there are many different chronic diseases, the problems
people experience are often quite similar. No matter what your illness,
you face the challenges of overcoming day-to-day problems connected
with it.
This is a new course, designed by renowned educator Dr Kate Lorig
and colleagues to help people get more out of life.
The course is led by two leaders who are trained and supported
by the Arthritis Foundation. The leaders have one or more chronic
conditions and successfully use the techniques taught in the course
to get on with their own lives.
The book "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions"
is an optional adjunct to the course. Twenty one chapters offer
guidance on setting goals, managing symptoms, exercising, understanding
medicines, communicating, finding resources and much more. The book
includes chapters on understanding chronic lung disease, heart disease,
stroke, arthritis and diabetes.
An Arthritis Module and an Osteoporosis Module with specific information
on these conditions is available as an adjunct to the 'Moving Towards
Wellness' course.
